This reminds me of what I said in a previous entry about online abuse in regards to acting and the http://www.nyfa.edu, which is the the New York Film Academy: “you need to survive physically and mentally.”

The New York Film Academy’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting for Film program places a heavy emphasis on two additional kinds of courses: foundation studies and physical and mental wellness.

The above quotes from BLEACH B STATION pretty much confirms that Katsuki is a casual, straightforward type of character, but I guess she isn’t on the radio show there to “instruct”. Instead of technical advice, it’s rather “sitting on the sofa” type of silly, relaxation talk. She seemed comfortable with Morita Mazakazu [C.V of BLEACH’S Ichigo, radio personality] and they laughed through and through.

Is being positive wrong? Is it frustrating to ask instruction from someone who faces little error due to length of experience?

On to PART 2

I found a file where I collected a bunch of tweets, from watchers to quotes, regarding the Shumei Doki program. Back then, when the program aired and afterwards, I wanted to gather as much impressions as I could, along with the information and the reactions of the advice.

If one of the methods to relieve discomfort and stress is to “laugh”, could it be so simple as to “not think about it?”

It seems to be the advice of a theater actor.

Because oneself is given a variety of roles from old to young person, perform obediently. After all, I was chosen, therefore voice that is performed should be good.

Obedience could mean reliance. Now, it could be my awful grammar and a mistranslation, I don’t want her to come off as completely arrogant. The concept seems very simple. I think she is being very considerate. A voice quality might be strange to a role, but actor should be loyal, and immersed, to the performance. Also, the point of the actor, especially the voice actor, is to play roles, few and many.

In voice acting, there is something called “voices of seven colors” (七色; nanairo) or a person who can perform various roles. It may mean a “specific thing” (ie: comedic, cool type, boy/girl, elder, animal); every actor has a width in performance. It does not necessarily mean the change of tone in a voice, which cannot change that significantly, but the nuance.

  • IMO, there has been very few cases where Katsuki-san disappoints me, even if it’s a male role. I think the male role is a bit subtle, that it made me wonder. Most women play a young male; Katsuki seemed to have had difficulty with the dark witch in the Pre-Cure films.

    The age of the role doesn’t matter.
    It’s nothing but an emotional problem [your feelings].

    Not sure if I got that third phrase properly. It either means to ignore age (or all worries) as an issue or use your feelings to reinforce your acting. It could be both.

    Katsuki Masako’s Performance Guidance: Speaking should be good

    Absolutely agree, and a lack of nervousness and the balance of breath (and consideration of how the speech comes out) support this. If anything, Katsuki-san articulation is often praised. Even recently, by Hirata Hiroaki, the C.V of ONE PIECE’s Sanji and SAIYUKI’S Sha Gojyo:

    平田:またあの役が大変だからね。僕は勝生さんの演技がとっても大好きで、セリフの言い方とか滑舌とか、すごく聞き取りやすい喋りをなさる方なんだけど、その勝生さんでも大変なセリフってあるんだ、って、僕も新鮮に見ていました。

    Katsuki-san will appear in SAIYUKI RELOAD BLAST as Sharak Sanjo. Apparently, it is a challenging role for her, perhaps due to the sutra, technical term, and the importance of the lines (as a SANZO PRIEST). Hoshi Souichiro expresses that it was “an exciting/very interesting experience to see”. Isn’t to face a flaw and break through it not a good thing?

    RAIJIN HAKKEI – ZANAM – Femme Fatale, Girl of Fate!

    A follow-up on Raijin Hachisei ZARAM, Okamoto Maya’s concept CD. First things first, I had the incorrect spelling. It is ZANAM and not ZARAM.

    Second, it is apparently “Raijin Hakkei” instead of “Hachisei”. It fits since in many cases, following a robot’s name within a product title are Japanese Kanji with four or five syllables, or they are just three or four Kanji or Kata. It flows well; it is still “Thunder God Eight”. Here are examples:

    • Beast King Golion (百獣王ゴライオン; Hyakyu Juoh Golion)

    More about ZANAM
    My previous article in a nutshell: Actress/Voice actress Okamoto Maya releases a music CD/short drama based on a concept – animation from the 1990s. Asimiya Kia provided the key visual above. Okamoto hasn’t released a music CD in years and turns out there’s plenty of background around ZANAM. That also includes a dream of Okamoto and her crew. Turns out it was thought up in a ramen shop.

    The OP and Insert song of ZANAM is “RISE AND FALL” and “Wind Song” (kaze no oto) respectively, and the main character is Kanon J Kusanagi. You can hear the songs on the radio show.

    This is why I like science fiction. A stunning imagination parallel with fantasy, but it feels close to reality as technology inevitably changes and intergalactic life and discovering are a part of our real lives.

    But this concept CD is indeed what it is – concept. More than I first thought, there is a lot of thought put into ZANAM. It’s not just a music tribute to the 1990s. And, my curiosity turned a little unhealthy.

    On the official site’s Femme Fatale bi-weekly radio show, I received a shoutout and some answers to questions, but I’m not particularly sure of those answers. If there is a possible spoiler, Okamoto mentions it as a “himitsu” or a “secret”.

    And Okamoto has the cutest voice. Surprisingly soothing and seems to fit a humble character. Somehow, I can pass twenty minutes even with little comprehension on what’s being said.

    I think, from what I can gather, Kanon has a brother but the rest is a secret. I think she did say “nii-san” (elder brother) and that “he’s not dead”? Tekkaman… There is also a hint of a rival; “nii-san” and “teki” (enemy) are in the same phrase but I don’t want to officially confirm. There’s also the “number 20”? Are there twenty robots? Again, I can’t confirm.

    One of Kanon’s special techniques is possibly “Cyclone flare!”

    And, it looks like extra questions are put on hold. I am patient, Okamoto-san.

    About the Work

    The excerpt below is from Akiba, explaining the initial setting so far (page 4):

    大体はそうですけど、実は麻宮先生からいただいたアイデアも入っています。最初、物語の舞台は2~300年後の未来という設定をドラゴンが適当に決めたんですけど、「300年後の地球」という設定にピンときてなかったんです。

    それが麻宮先生との打ち合わせの後、一緒にラーメン食べに行った時に、麻宮先生が「麻弥ちゃん、これ本当に面白いよ。でもね、舞台を現代にしたほうがいいよ」って言ってくださったんです。ご自身の作品もアニメ化されているその道のプロから言われたのは大きかったですね。

    それと、最初ドラゴンが考えた話は宇宙で活躍する内容だったんですが、麻宮先生は「それを現代の建物とか使ってやったほうがいい」ともおっしゃって、私はその両方をかなえるべきだと思ってがんばって設定を考えたんです。

    で、物語の舞台は結局架空の2017年にして、そこに地球と火星が登場するんです。カノンは火星にいて、雷神は地球から来ます。この地球はムー大陸やアトランティス大陸が沈まずに古代文明などが続いた、私たちの知る地球とは違う発達を遂げている地球なんです。でも核戦争が起こったり、巨大隕石などの衝突といった災害があったりして、大気が吹き飛んでいる。その結果、人類は地下に潜った人たちと、それ以前に火星をテラフォーミングして移住した人たちの2つの勢力に分かれていて、その火星が今の2017年の地球と同じような状態なんです。

    そしたら人類は、きっと地球を甦らせようとしますよね。そうするとテラフォーミングに成功してる火星と手を結びます。火星は、昔ながらの職人文化や伝統、精神論などを地球から引き継いでいます。そういったものがからみあっていろいろドラマが生まれて、地球は誰のものだ、という話になっていくんです。

    Asimiya Kia gave an idea. Then, Dragon, a manager, decided that the setting should be on Earth “200-300 years in the future”. At ramen shop, Asimiya commented that “it’s really interesting but it should be good in modern times”. A modern construction; Dragon wanted to initially begin in space. After some thought out effort, it’s decided that the story is set in the year 2017 and both Earth and Mars play a role.

    Kanon is in Mars and The Raijin come from Earth. The Earth that we know is different; ancient civilization exists. Earth has experienced nuclear war and atmospheric disasters. The people enter underground.

    As for Mars, they flourish through terraforming. The people are split into two powers. Thus, with this development, Mars is the Earth of 2017 (AKA: Modern times). There is an attempt to revive Earth of course, and people from Earth ally with Mars. Mars contain the needs of Terraforming. Of course. From Earth, they adopted the crafting culture, the traditions and spiritualism. This is where the drama is born. The “who or what” on Earth is the story. It becomes gradually.

    In addition to this, the robots used in battle are referred to as “Mules”, which engage in “Mule Fights”. You could say that it’s the same as a mobile suit (MS), or how we refer a MS to a “gundam”. The model is a “Mule”, and one of the Mules is ZANAM (zanamu).

    This is from Nakarigi’s blog, transcribed from Okamoto’s radio segments. I’ll just do a couple for today. Hopefully more will reveal itself in the future:

    Kanon J Kusanagi
    22-24 years old. “J” is from Jeanne d’Arc. A warrior of the Mule Fight; C.V is Okamoto-san.

    It’s revealed in the above interview that Kusanagi is based on the sword in Japanese Shinto myth that slew the snake Orochi. Kanon is an expert in kenjutsu, or the art of the sword, trained by her grandfather. Silver hair, violet eyes, slender body. Are her breasts nice? (LOL). She is the ace pilot of a platoon. Height is around 165 – 168 cm (About 5’5″ or 5’6″). That is her in the key visual.

    One interesting part is “Part of the body during specific condition changes”. What could this mean? If I were to think of even “Battle Spirits: Zero” or old mecha shows, it could be a “change of character”. Another thought is that there’s an impediment such as weakening the body (or mind) while fighting.

    I think this is cool. And, I am further surprised by Okamoto’s kindness. It also looks like, by becoming curious in this project, I met others who are also interested.

    A small follow up from yesterday’s article Quick Impressions of GEAR FIGHTER DENDOH!

    I am a bit ill so here’s a Sketch today and some lyrics that I’ve been wondering about when I started the Dendoh series. So episode 1’s intro song, and occasional scene music, is called “Heaven’s Premonition” (天空の予感; tenkuu no yokan). I thought it was a good insert for the scene where the Data Weapons scatter across the earth, and seeing a mysterious little girl stumbling across a beach.

    A 90s idea? Okamoto Maya x Asamiya Kia Concept CD Thunder God Eight ZANAM @femmefatale_kaz @maya_pan0203


    Voice actress Okamoto Maya released a concept CD of her fictitious anime “Raijin Hachi ZANAM”. What does that mean? It’s basically an independent production in the form of a CD, rendering the idea of a hit 90s sci-fi anime.

    Illustration/Key Visual is by Asamiya Kia (麻宮騎亜) of STUDIO TRON, who’s in charge of illustrations for sci-fi Shinseiki Vagrants (神星記ヴァグランツ), Space Battleship YAMATO 2199 movie, Martian Successor Nadesico manga, Batman Child of Dreams, and Silent Mobius. She also does the genga (key animation used for replication) and moving scenes for anime works such as Naucisca, Z Gundam, and Lupin The 3rd Part 3. Character design for Sonic Soldier Borgman, Zeorymer, and Detonator Orgun. She also works on creature design for KAMEN RIDER FOURZE and was animation director for Shurato (OM SOWA!).     About the Work

    NEWS WALKER: “Concept anime is group performance staged in Earth and Mars. Okamoto Maya’s self-made plan interview”

    Part 2 of Interview

    She provides the voice of Emma Sheen from Z Gundam (where she was 17 years old), Haruka Minato of Nadesico, Soretta of SAKURA TAISEN and Saiko Yuki Silent Mobius, among many others. She “retired” for a while, dedicating time to singing and overseas dubbing, even going to New York. (Source: Wikipedia). She is a member of talent office NEVERLAND ARTS Co.,Ltd., being one of its few “voice actors”.

    Emma Sheen plays the clear minded role of the AEUG (united earth faction), having defected from the TITANS due to their brutal methods. If I could explain Okamoto’s voice quality, it’s “chirpy” with a bit of an adult-sister feeling.

    Full title of this project is “The Eight Thunder Gods ZANAM -bFemme Fatale – Girl of Fate.” (雷神八系-ZANAM- ファム・ファタール 運命の女). If ever produced as an anime, the idea for it to be a 52 ep series with the image of a contemporary 90s anime. For starters, there’s the theme RISE AND FALL, which Okamoto sings. In this work, she is the character Kanon J (Jeanne d’Arc) Kusanagi.

    Okamoto, in the above interview, states that the main song wouldn’t have a simple theme such as “good and evil” or “light and darkness”. Also, not “fire” and “water”; it is difficult to distinguish. There is a mention of “Wind” and the eight thunder gods as a part of the “anime”‘s concept.

    その後に火星や第三勢力の目線になっていけば面白く感じてもらえるのかなと思っています。

    地球側には地球側の、火星側には火星側の戦う理由を描けたらなと。

    地球には8人の「雷神」がいて、それが「風神」と出会うことで運命が成就するんです。タイトルの「運命の女」はそこから来ています。

    The official website of ZANAM provides information on an official CD and radio show that Okamoto hosts, receiving questions via e-mail. The show is called 岡本麻弥のラジオDEファム・ファタール. (Okamoto Maya’s radio DE Femme Fatale)

    The CD contains 2 songs + short drama “Blueness Star” for 2,000 yen. Then, there was a music event at M3 [media mix doujishi exhibition] back in April. Here are the CD Contents:

    You can hear a piece of KAZE NO OTO on the radio show. Sounds like it’s 90s bridging into 2000s. I can’t find Rise & Fall.

    Good luck in your efforts Okamoto and everyone else! ❤ This is unique and I am always into these bots. Like she said, it is “wishful thinking”: 50 episode anime, participating with a 90s cast, and so on (source: interview). It could be foolish, but an idea can only sprout into something interesting. That’s the whole point of arts. Because there was someone, aside from Okamoto, who contained the feeling of wanting to see an animation that contained the essence of 1990s.”

    If 90s is what she looks for, I wouldn’t mind Katsuki Masako as a fierce rival. Hayashibara Megumi could also be that or the evil Mars empress (lol). I can also imagine Ueda Yuji, Yasunori Matsumoto, and Seki Tomokazu. Okamoto mentions that even she would like for the project to be something for a young voice actor to participate in.

    I will keep an eye on this project and provide more updates. I’m a bit too busy to catch anything from the radio show, if I can catch any familiar Japanese that is (^.;), but we’ll see. Next time, I’ll look over that interview a bit more.

    52 episodes? If anything, I couldn’t mind a cheap budget show even with a freeze frame, akin to an older video game for cutscenes.

    How to explain this guy’s style?

    “A traditional Japanese with violin”. Or rather, a “storyteller of music”. That is what you call Utagatari (歌語り). Take the thrums of the string instrument for example. Hano debuted in 1978, learned piano in his child days and then moved to guitar, which I confused with a violin I guess.

    A couple of his favorite artists are Debussy, Bartok (violin concerto specialist), and Takemitsu Toru. Hobbies are photography (写真)、reading (読書)、traveling (旅)、performance appreciation (演芸鑑賞)、and kabuki (歌舞伎も). He likes jazz and pop, favoring artists like Pat Metheny and Baden Powell.

    Check out Hano’s photo collection and music collection. For the latter, the songs contain a theme such as recitation, anime, nature, and story. This is a song for the concept anime Sanada Gunden, produced by Bungyoso (3×3 Eyes, Macross F).

    Participated in the music of Musashi Ninpouden Ninja Reppu. A TV drama based on Saitama prefecture’s local tokusatsu hero. Musashi was the former name of Saitama Prefecture. Check out the Twitter account @ninja_reppu for more.

    He also participated in the soundtrack of YOTODEN (妖刀伝; supernatural sword story) OVA series. Internationally titled “Wrath of Ninja” series. Also, insert music for the short toku series “Shinraku bishoujo Mami (侵略美少女ミリ; invading pretty girl Mami).

    Matter of fact, it was Yotoden that made me think “violin” or “cello”. Heavy strings. Yotoden became popular and the soundtrack became a hit on Oricon charts (Hano’s profile). I agree. It has great music! Check it out by all means.
