A funny question: Putting #fanfiction in your resume (Revision)


Here is a small revision of my now deleted post. I was rushing out the door when I posted the previous one and I’m sorry. I’m sure there was more that I wanted to add, and I should’ve checked it better.

I found this funny question lying somewhere on the net, and I forgot where. It quickly met with an answer of rejection. But instead of saying “No” and leaving it at that, I thought about it a bit more diligently.

First, I probably understand the point of asking the question. You want to provide writing samples such as for magazine or newspaper articles so you can look like an author; news media, including the spread of misinformation, imbue the online and social media.

Second, you were passionate about the work you created despite any kind of quality. Some need work, some put their hair and heart into it for sure, some think they are arrogantly or truthfully, creative. You have something to show.

Third, there is the protection of one’s product or property. Whether you like it or not, the practice of fanfiction is disagreeable here and there. It is thanks to advocates of freedom of expression and of parody being a legal medium of entertainment that fanworks are given positive critique. Some published authors have written fanfiction as well.

So what is the answer?

I’d go with “no”. I also thought of why the question was given a “no” from where I found it; the word “no” can also mean that there should be alternatives.

Here is the negative part: I took consideration in the influence of the website that you place your work in.

Fanfiction, especially Fanfiction.net, which is considered the core site for where the works are found, can be a literature cesspool. I myself have ambivalent views. If you put in a link such as “https://www.fanfiction.net/~TelsaDagger” (not real by the way) in your resume or cover level, it might look pretty strange. However, people see themselves as authors and you, once in a while, can find a good product.

I also thought that this may be the most important reason: You’re not aspiring to become a published author or land your article in a reading medium by springing off the back of another unless you’re doing news or some other kind of non-fiction.

If you look at the guidelines of manuscript submissions, even for books or comics, you realize that your creativity matters. The base that you will provide matters. That is the usual case — your aspect that you must make exist. Also, when you do work on getting a writer’s job or do publishing, you have to offer reasons as to why you’re qualified and why should your writing be approved? Will your writing aim be a success? Think of the readers.

Do not think Inuyasha. Not Olympus. Not The Hunger Games. Not Rick and Morty. Not Big Bang Theory. Not Game of Thrones.

When it comes to fanfiction and one’s life, you need to know are you legally able to write (or translate) derivative work? Are you given the permission? Does the publisher, the person (or people/company) who concocted the work gave you the permission? Do you shoot to become a writer for DC Comics or Disney for example?

In any case, it’s not like the work you made can’t be inspired into something else. Also, as fanfiction is writing, you’ll have the mentality of an author.

Check out Attack on Titan Anthology, an reinterpretation of Isayama Hajime’s original work. Various artists provided their own spin and style on AoT.

As you can see, Attack of Titan was an international success, whether you agree or not, and it makes sense to do this anthology.

I hope this is fair.

I even thought of saying “How about posting fanfics elsewhere?” For example, what if I posted my fanfics on this blog? But ultimately, I still thought the word “No”.

This reminds me of what I said in a previous entry about online abuse in regards to acting and the http://www.nyfa.edu, which is the the New York Film Academy: “you need to survive physically and mentally.”

The New York Film Academy’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting for Film program places a heavy emphasis on two additional kinds of courses: foundation studies and physical and mental wellness.

The above quotes from BLEACH B STATION pretty much confirms that Katsuki is a casual, straightforward type of character, but I guess she isn’t on the radio show there to “instruct”. Instead of technical advice, it’s rather “sitting on the sofa” type of silly, relaxation talk. She seemed comfortable with Morita Mazakazu [C.V of BLEACH’S Ichigo, radio personality] and they laughed through and through.

Is being positive wrong? Is it frustrating to ask instruction from someone who faces little error due to length of experience?

On to PART 2

I found a file where I collected a bunch of tweets, from watchers to quotes, regarding the Shumei Doki program. Back then, when the program aired and afterwards, I wanted to gather as much impressions as I could, along with the information and the reactions of the advice.

If one of the methods to relieve discomfort and stress is to “laugh”, could it be so simple as to “not think about it?”

It seems to be the advice of a theater actor.

Quore from SHUMEI DOKI:

Because oneself is given a variety of roles from old to young person, perform obediently. After all, I was chosen, therefore voice that is performed should be good.

Obedience could mean reliance. Now, it could be my awful grammar and a mistranslation, I don’t want her to come off as completely arrogant. The concept seems very simple. I think she is being very considerate. A voice quality might be strange to a role, but actor should be loyal, and immersed, to the performance. Also, the point of the actor, especially the voice actor, is to play roles, few and many.

In voice acting, there is something called “voices of seven colors” (七色; nanairo) or a person who can perform various roles. It may mean a “specific thing” (ie: comedic, cool type, boy/girl, elder, animal); every actor has a width in performance. It does not necessarily mean the change of tone in a voice, which cannot change that significantly, but the nuance.

  • IMO, there has been very few cases where Katsuki-san disappoints me, even if it’s a male role. I think the male role is a bit subtle, that it made me wonder. Most women play a young male; Katsuki seemed to have had difficulty with the dark witch in the Pre-Cure films.

    The age of the role doesn’t matter.
    It’s nothing but an emotional problem [your feelings].
    Load your emotions within your stomach

    Not sure if I got that third phrase properly. It either means to ignore age (or all worries) as an issue or use your feelings to reinforce your acting. It could be both.

    Katsuki Masako’s Performance Guidance: Speaking should be good

    Absolutely agree, and a lack of nervousness and the balance of breath (and consideration of how the speech comes out) support this. If anything, Katsuki-san articulation is often praised. Even recently, by Hirata Hiroaki, the C.V of ONE PIECE’s Sanji and SAIYUKI’S Sha Gojyo:

    平田:またあの役が大変だからね。僕は勝生さんの演技がとっても大好きで、セリフの言い方とか滑舌とか、すごく聞き取りやすい喋りをなさる方なんだけど、その勝生さんでも大変なセリフってあるんだ、って、僕も新鮮に見ていました。

    Katsuki-san will appear in SAIYUKI RELOAD BLAST as Sharak Sanjo. Apparently, it is a challenging role for her, perhaps due to the sutra, technical term, and the importance of the lines (as a SANZO PRIEST). Hoshi Souichiro expresses that it was “an exciting/very interesting experience to see”. Isn’t to face a flaw and break through it not a good thing?

    Doggie Sketch a Day – Let’s call this Trirouzar (トリロウザー)


    I think this SaD entry took a span of one and a half or two days, done before bed and during breaks at work.

    So I thought of “hey, let’s share bizarre concepts”, inspired by Raijin Hakkei ZANAM, and I also thought of a funny question that someone asked: “Should I show my fanfics on resume?” That’s for another entry.

    it started out as “cubes” and I just wanted to practice with being slow.

    So, while doing this, I thought: “Two boys, mecha pilots, and a senior officer guiding them. Draw it.” It just randomly popped up. Let’s called it sengōkinrei (戦合金霊) or Fighting Alloy Soul Trirouzar (トリロウザー). Rou (鑞) can mean various things such as “dragon” and “tin solder”. This isn’t something I elaborated, or plan to, but in the future, I may share small novel and game scopes. However, if they’re small, they’re not workable; most proposals require transcripts, summaries/outlines, table of content, an ending, and so. Trirouzar isn’t one of those.

    All I really have are character names. So, I thought of a three-man group, two young boys that are training to be robot riders and have different personalities: Hot-head red suit Leo Touma (熱血のレオ刀間), calculating blue-suit Sniper Shoji (冷静のスナイパー庄児). They are trained by Black Tiger Lt Cdr. O’Connor (無愛想の黒いタイガーオコナー), a female officer.

    In most cases, the main characters who accidentally end up in the eponymous machine are quite young. The drawing makes the kids look young, such as 9 – 13, which isn’t odd at all either.

    For Leo, I thought “Go Gundam” and maybe kill his parents? 😉 Killed by alien invaders. Then, maybe he’ll be driven with revenge. Initially, that’ll be his reason to fight. But then, is there a way for him to be swayed out of revenge? So he’ll fight for what’s really important, and not prevent useless casualties? No, not Shinn…. Wouldn’t that be fun to see?

    One day I’ll explain my actual super robot series.

    Tomorrow is going to be more “rivals” and more “Flute”.

    Doggie Sketch a Day : Gau Ban (ガウ・バン) practice #SHADOWSKILL


    More sketches from my 9 x 6 (24.cm x 15cm). Once again, it’s Gau from SHADOW SKILL as I practice his look. The upper right looks a bit like how Okada Megumu (creator of SS) draws him, and the others makes him look more like a typical main character from a Japanese animation. It’s hard for me to put him down. between the animation product and the comic product, he looks different.

    However he turns out, I’d like for Gau to look dynamic during his battle pose. A bit concerned with his hair.

    • Guts/Guts Regeneration: Points needed to use monster attacks during battle

    NAGAThe Brutal Snake!

    • Appearances: MFA, MF2, MFA2, MF3 (PS2)、MF5、MFDS2
    • Style: Keep strong and hitting; shaving off a life.
    • Profiles: MFDS2, MRA2
    • Signature attacks: Stab, Tail Sweep, Drill Assault, Poison, Eye Beam.

    A monster that is just as familiar as Suezo, Mocchi, Dino and Hare. It’s name means snake or a dragon, has a brutal nature, and attacks with its large claws and tail, plus the stinger on its tail contains  a toxin. Because of the viciousness, Naga thinks of nothing but victory against an enemy.

    Fighting Style: Naga has adequate life, slow Guts, and isn’t too fast, nor does it have the best defense, so it uses accurate hits to slow down and disorient an enemy. It’s a deadly foe because of the force within the hits. It doesn’t do knockout blows such as Hare and Golem, but if swift and forceful enough in the blows, and it won’t go down quickly because of the high Life parameter, the Naga should be approached carefully.

    Anime: Like Gali, Naga is also one of the Four Devas of Warumon (English: Big Bad Four) under Moo. His ruthless character is suitable.
    He is responsible for the destruction of Holly and Suezo’s town. C.V is Kobayashi Kazuya (小林 和矢) from 81 Produce, but he’s particularly elusive. For some reason, Naga’s voice has an echo effect in the original version, while the English version is much like a gravely snake.

    Mobile Suit Gundam: War in The Pocket (機動戦士ガンダム0080 ポケットの中の戦争; kidou senshi gundam poketto no naka no sensou).

    Near the end of the One Year War, there’s an incident in Side 6, a neutral colony.

    That’s it. Is this overrated? It was a genuine cry and this is a well-done product. It shows friendship, it shows fear, it shows courage, it shows innocence, in a span of three episodes. That’s why I put it here.

    This OVA/novel was mentioned in the GOO Ranking poll, in which I covered, about which gundam makes everyone cry the most. Pocket ranks in TOP 3.

    To quote someone on NicoDouga’s comments on the poll:

    アルが泣いてた時に「戦争なんてすぐ始まるよ!」って言われたラスト深すぎた

    “At the time when Al was crying, ‘the war will begin!’ said, at the end, it was quite deep. Profound.”

    EXACTLY! (I think that’s a rough quote). Also, WiP contains one of my favorite OP, in gundam and in anime in general.
