Making Mistakes and Sketch a Day| Doggie Stories – Why do I like drawing 2?

PREVIOUS ARTICLE: the answer is in the line

So, last Wednesday, I was just sketching and seeing how much I could do.

I am well reminded that the time and patience is necessary to provide a good work. Also, I am guilty for now. However, immense detail wasn’t the goal as it was quick sketches and the use of mostly a mechanical pencil. I was a little surprised at the differences that each drawing attempt made. Or rather, I was surprised at the occasional improvements. I would say, “That looked better than before”.

The answer is in the line | Doggie Stories – Why do I like drawing? #cyberf

A little weekend frustration trying to figure out scheduling balance. School and work is quite tantalizing. With a child niece? Even more so. Plus, trying to figure out method of payment for hundreds of semester tuition, which probably gave rise to most of my frustration. I ended up sighing a lot.

I may have to go into counseling.

Doggie Drawing

Drawing is one of those things that I think that one can continue to improve on. Change, offer different perspectives (or character?) each time. The same with writing.

I don’t like tutorials because it doesn’t completely teach you how to draw. They’ll have the basic techniques, blocking in, and how to hold a pencil, but they’ll break it down in few steps. Is it expecting you to follow directions to a T?

It won’t come out exactly especially if you’re starting out. The importance is your confidence and how much practice you put in it. You will then wonder where your style ends up. In addition to the confidence, there is also the critique. And, a wise man once said:

d4559b9cf76fe91919ee94e875b21e75.jpg

You’re often told to start on paper. I do hate cliches because I wonder when the improvement will come, or when that certain spot comes.

Despite the bland word, PRACTICE is necessity, plus a sense of contrastive and comparative perception, symmetry, area perspective and negative space, field of view, and many other things. Then, by instinct, your hand moves and don’t realize it; that is another issue with tutorials, written by those who already know what to do, instilled firmly with muscle memory.

The line expresses many things, and each medium can produce a value. A thick line, a thin line, a round or sharp line that can express the age of a face, a muscle, etc. There are also invisible lines that support your idea of proportions/measurements. When you make an initial guideline sketch, don’t be afraid to go outside of them.

How to see shapes?

Experts, or professionals, say it’s the right brain: One of two Hannibal-favorite muscles in your head responsible for imagination, visualization, intuition and more.

That’s because you want to see shapes, rather than focusing too hard on “what a thing is supposed to be (or the association of a part)? An estimation; rather than a nose like how you’re familiar with it, you probably see a few circles. Take the shades of a person’s face for example. Thus, the reason behind the blind-coutour exercises.

In three entries, or rather one, I discuss about the 10,000 hour theory and provide examples of “improvement”.

According to Betsy Edwards, these students improved in five days: BEFORE then AFTER

How you’re holding the pencil, and how relaxed your posture is, can really make a difference.

More another day.

A free acting sense? Mental Strength? Release the stress | 2015 Katsuki Masako x Shumei Doki Article (Part 1) #勝生真沙子

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.”
Helen Keller (ヘレン・ケラー)

It’s been nearly two years in the making. Matter of fact, this was hanging in my documents, incomplete, for quite some time. Real life has gotten in the way, but this is something I wanted to place a lot of effort and accuracy into. Why?

Back in September 2015, there was a program special called Shumei Doki (趣味どきっ!一声入魂!アニメ声優塾; Hobby time! Voice consecration! Anime Voice actor private school!) hosted by multi-talent Nakagawa Shoko (AKA: SHOKOTAN) and two other guests. Each week, Shoko and these guests are assigned to a single instructor: Eight well known seiyu or voice actors. I love the majority of them, their craft indeed renowned.

What was this special about?”

Why is “that anime character” we know so attractive? The voice actors who breathe life and voice to the character, voice actors of effort and inventive idea, working behind the production, source of passion, are revealed to light.

This program, completing charming character, performance of voice actors are called “Ani god spirit”.

Lessons of life are learned.

One of the instructors, the seventh, is someone I would probably put in my TOP 10 Japanese voice actors. When it comes to females in entirety, she would probably rank in my TOP 5. I adore this person.

A sensual tone, a passionate timbre, probably a go-to-gal when you reliably want a strong female character, this person is probably best known to Westerners as the voice of NARUTO’s Fifth Hokage and Sailor Moon’s Sailor Neptune (in which was recently given to Ohara Sayaka for Sailor Moon Crystal) among a long line of credits – animation, tokusatsu, video games, dubbing, narrator, drama CDS, singing. Among her performances is her rather silly personality; she is also a VA tutor of the Tokyo Animation College in Shinjuku. There’s an impression that a “heart is straight”.

Her name is Katsuki Masako.
(その名前は勝生真沙子)

There are many things that I could say about this person but I should contain myself to the main topic.

In today’s age where there are live shows and music performances of seiyu, Katsuki-san’s appearance in media is quite rare. In such an opportunity, as an instructor of Shumei DOKI, she applies knowledge that is fundamental NOT just for any actor, but is also universal health advice. What to learn from “sensei”? Sensei’s advice is nothing technical or complex.

On the program, she was defined as 止まらない勝生 (tomaranai katsuki). The unstoppable Katsuki.

It’s weird because Katsuki’s theme is “freedom”: Having little preparation of getting into the part, and let the flow run free. Why is that? It’s due to the pressure. An actor’s mind should be released of pressure. Now, I will elaborate on sensei’s performance style or Katsuki-ryuu (勝生流).

This is the Refresh Style (リフレッシュ術).

心構え = 勝生流声優道
Prepation/readiness/mental atitude = Katsuki style VA path

One of the techniques to release this pressure or stress is LAUGHING! I recall her appearance on “BLEACH B STATION”, hosted by Morita Matsukazu (the C.V of Kurosaki Ichigo) and answered a question from someone regarding “being scared”

And K’s answer was “WARAE” or “to laugh!”.

BLEACH B STATION
舞台に立ったときにあがらない為のアドバイスを下さい!

勝「みんなあがってんだよっ!」

Tell me advice to stand on stage.
Everyone get up!

The majority of her explanation in Shumei Doki is about a strong mentality, or there is “little matter”.

I found a hilarious photo regarding the “laughing” advice in connection to the program and I have yet to find it (and I am totally upset about it).

Using the voice

anatomy-of-the-larynx-by-arijit-3-638.jpg
The diaphragm, which is the piece of muscle underneath your ribcage that supports your lungs and the flow of air, has an important function in breathing, thus your voice. Another important factor for your use of voice is your larynx. To put it simply, the muscles you contain in neck and chest must coordinate equally. This is necessary when singing, using the muscles in continuum.

Your vocal cords (in laryx) function by vibrating from air and making sound. Because you breathe outward while speaking, laryx goes down and your cords close. Avoid touching the back of something with tongue (or muscles). To not stray far from the point and not into science, the point is that breathing is highly important. You have a versatile voice capable of making sound, including tone change. So confidence shall be a factor in a good performance because it’s both physical and mental. Inflection is important as well; not just voice but the use of speech.

Listen to a contrabass flute of different range of “low” notes.

A mental effort is a significant factor within a performer not just for the practice and conveying for a character, but to avoid self-indulgence, and to know what to expect from such a job (ie: difficult products, criticism/ugly remarks, etc). This also includes your mistakes. Also, a confrontation of a physical and mental disorder. There should be a step-by-step patience and motivation.

Part 2 and further elaboration should come another time.

About Katsuki-san:

Spreading the love? About @GL_Phantasy + an Issue in Michigan

What good am I? If I don’t promote my own platform, expecting someone to see it?

Once in a while, on social media, I like to share news or some knowledgeable tidbits that I happen to pass by. About future developments such as what we see in outer space, renewable gas, school techniques, touching stories about the handicapped, local sports, military, etc. Not necessarily politics. Something with some kind of meaning. So, I made an account to spread interest in different themes.

Maybe I didn’t think too ahead.

To provide advertisement, networking, and maybe advice with research. For example, you want to work in psychology so you and I should find a way to spread counseling (or maybe you want to be a teacher, and you want to do writing). For example on writing, you can give me one of your essays to put on my blog. Also, advertising donation pages, and maybe my own personal projects if I ever find time.

I’m not too embarrassed by it. It’s something that I always enjoyed. It’s something I think social media should be used for.

On the deeper end, it is a selfish reason to grow money. I also have my insecurities as desirable money doesn’t come soon and net popularity is unpredictable.

Being human, I can be selfish and financial insecurity is one of the top issues in the United States.

  • BOSTON REVIEW: 80 Percent of Americans Experience Economic Insecurity (Fischer)
  • theatlantic.com: What Is Driving America’s Financial Woes? (Green)
  • It’s funny when people can get paid for their own opinion or sharing information via free writing, or exposing rhetoric. It is not that strange to do then?

I even considered AdSense and changing the blog address, since the website’s name is a bit ridiculous, and who is interested in a person called “Doggie”? You don’t exactly find a place called “Supra anything” and expect something useful. It is indeed in the name. You see “Conservative Wagon”, you think political; you see “StickWithIt”, you may think…of a few things.

More importantly, the views don’t stack up so it’s not a good idea for me to try Adsense. Various people always note about the unpredictability of net popularity.

TO be honest, despite the blog address, I want people to read more. That’s why I do comic reviews. I plan to do more for novels.

My six-year-old niece is in a growing psychological stage in her life and has to start being more comfortable in reading. She’s also saving money in her piggie bank (or trying to). Reading is a growing problem in Michigan, particularly southern Michigan (AKA: The troll land), where over 80% of the Detroit residents are not proficient in reading and math. For the latter, I’m probably one of them and I stay clear from accounting.

Apparently, in Detroit, it is getting so bad that they have to sue the goverment and local teachers for making their children illiterate. I even brought that up at one point.

CNSNews.com: Detroit Public Schools: 93% Not Proficient in Reading; 96% Not Proficient in Math

CNS states 90%, while I see comments starting 50%; it’s still too high. Among that, there is also the issue with real estate and crime.

Unacceptable. Words for mental abuse online #health #support

So far,  I made a couple of entries on information, what’s relayed, by who, and about the consideration of conducting oneself. One’s character.

Months ago, I saw something that made me irate, but more so, I became impressed by the aftermath.

    This is Doggie Simmer Talk.

Who is deserving of online abuse and why?

Not sure what I would call her. She’s not my “friend” even though I’d secretly like her to be (did I say “secret”?). I’ll keep it anonymous.  Let’s call her “Lady M”, like Mikumo from Macross.

She’s “young” and talented with the big sister title.

    Mikumo_kkk.png

Popularity could be synonymous to “knowing thoroughly what he/she does”. Whether it is broadcasting, which I always loved, culinary, writing, or singing.

But I respect her. This Lady M. I don’t like the idea of someone being put under another due to popularity. However, if it weren’t for popularity, some wouldn’t follow in “Lady M’s” footsteps. Some people, notable names even, aspire to be her or work with her.

M seemed to have be accused for “self-promotion”. In other words, an unworthy human being; maybe a washout even? There is a gap within the “popularity level”. Also, she might’eve been called bad names and was frequently disparaged.

    Why was such hatred received?

Jealously? A thrill? A deceptive truth?

Lady M was being susceptible to abuse for some time. It is perhaps the reason why she’s been fickle and upset over “her words”. Grieving over it as if she received some attacks that most could not see. One point she put her foot down and revealed this abuse.

    “That is not my intention”.

“Those words, do not send them to another woman aside from myself!”

It is possible that she “isn’t nice“.  Who isn’t rash and who doesn’t get angry and say a harsh thing? Especially on social media? However, so far, from my own impression, M is pretty accepting to a follower or a random stranger, easily inspired, and does not say a cruel thing. People who have worked with her has stated the same thing: “Heart is nice”, “big-hearted”, “nice big sister”, relatively the same.

They describe her as “温かい” (atatakai) and “大らか” (ooraka; generous). This is a reply to someone who said that M “seemed scary”:

    ええっ⁉︎ 優しいよ〜(^ー^)ノ💕
    まぁ声も強いし、キャラのイメージもあるんだろうね^_−☆
    ハッキリした方だけど、心はあったかいんでござるよ

    “Huh?! She’s tender.

Voice is strong, and so is the character’s image. [The character is strong too]

A blunt person, however, has a warm heart.”

From my POV, M does say many strange phrases (ie: “A man holding a purse is odd” or along those lines) but often apologizes for it. The “blunt person” part may be true after all. It’s not entirely the abuse. M always says “Sorry u(_-_)u” for an awkward phrase. Those who receive scathing words are usually those who dedicate their time and their actions to being negative to others. Take politicians for example.

So far, she hasn’t said anything personal or political, and often praises/thanks others, commenting that she is “healed by gentle words”.

For those who witnessed the abuse was quite supportive, and M thanked them.

    Doggie Thoughts

I’ve seen this before, the belittlement of someone being “not popular enough”. An actor could retire for not receiving enough roles, let alone main roles,  as it is a demanding, competitive, and wide industry, and someone could leave a comment such as “I don’t know you, so good for you” or “Great”.

For Lady M personally, it is extreme ignorance. There can be more said, but that is all.

To quote www.nyfa.edu: “you need to survive physically and mentally.”

Also, do not quit. After so many years, Lady M has not quit. Don’t think of yourself as useless and don’t let anyone else say so. And if you’re wrong, be humble and reflect on the mistake/words.

Your #Opinion Matters? How to conduct #research and what is opinion?

Another old piece of work that was just resting in my drafts. I spent 2 to 3 weeks blanking on an essay. When I started, something made me angry and I can’t remember what. Also, I was going to start with something irate but changed my mind. Like I said in another entry, my manner should be positive.

    So, here’s a short version.

If there’s something valuable to know, is that you can place an idea down, and a moment later, you can channel a different thought process. Changes are inevitable; not getting it the first time is inevitable.

    Writing and Opinion

Do not allow anyone to say that opinion doesn’t matter.

It does not have to do with one being allowed to have their own point of view, but rather, it should be known where such talking points derive from and how it can be utilized. Writing should have smooth transition and clarity. Then again, people can make a living by spreading false information and triggering flames of emotions. They also make a living by using insulting language and degrading people.

The Internet is overflowing with information, and how ones’ thoughts are pushed onto another by anger. Opinions are inspired by questions. Opinion makes the gears moving, and creates the information.

Criticism, interpretation, search strategies, and knowing that it isn’t all tentative. Saying that an opinion “doesn’t matter” is a dastardly, foolish thing to say when you must design proposals and ideas for a cause. For a company. They are created to enlighten and persuade.

But what is a foolish opinion? And isn’t the term “opinion” the opposite of fact?

What is the point of the following:

    • TV Ratings
    • Comments
    • Newspaper Editorial.
    • Law and Judicial Power
    • Crime Investigation (Police Procedural)
    • Tutorship

Here are the current definitions for “opinion”. From Webster’s New World, Merriam, Wiktionary and Dictionary.com:

    Dictionary.com (source)

    noun
1.a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to producecomplete certainty.
    2. a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.

3 .the formal expression of a professional judgment:

to ask for a second medical opinion.
    4. Law. the formal statement by a judge or court of the reasoning and theprinciples of law used in reaching a decision of a case.

    5. a judgment or estimate of a person or thing with respect to character, merit, etc.:

    to forfeit someone’s good opinion.

    Webster’s New World

    Merriam-Webster (source)

1a :  a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular   matter We asked them for their opinions about the new stadium.

    1. 2a :  belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge a person of rigid opinions. b :  a generally held view news programs that shape public opinion

    2. 3a :  a formal expression of judgment or advice by an expert My doctor says that I need an operation, but I’m going to get a second opinion.b :  the formal expression (as by a judge, court, or referee) of the legal reasons and principles upon which a legal decision is based The article discusses the recent Supreme Court opinion.

In Thorndike-Barnhart’s Junior Dictionary, “opinion” means “what one thinks; belief not so strong as knowledge”; judgement; impression; estimate”.

Please understand that anyone, including myself, could relay false information and wordy accounts, giving off the impression that he/she is an intellect. Everyone should think for themselves.

According to all definitions including from Thorndike-Barnhart, opinion can be flexible. It can either be a biased, subjective thought or a critical, well-thought out conclusion.  They can be with merit.

yourdictionary: Examples of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos

Cause and effect are put into mind.

Opinion  should be used with responsibility. Also,  opinion should have a strong conviction, and prepared for controversy and retraction if necessary. Enlighten and persuade – even if you’re nuts.

Here’s some of my most scathing opinions, either well thought out or done in haste:

Now of course I can do follow-ups or withdraw some things that I said.

The Arslan ones are not just mine but from the opinions of others and my limited theater experience (and I enjoy the series). Also, some sharp listening. I refute the idea that the highest popularity is where the best talent lies 100%. Because when it comes to popularity, people can act with a thoughtless passion (and through use of the above-mentioned “foolish opinion”). If you watch Arslan, try and look back and see if you have a different insight from before. The rest is pretty basic.

From The Atlantic Article “Why People Watch Movies and Shows Over and Over”:

“The dynamic linkages between one’s past, present, and future experiences through the re-consumption of an object allow existential understanding,” Russell and Levy write. “Reengaging with the same object, even just once, allows a reworking of experiences as consumers consider their own particular enjoyments and understandings of choices they have made.” This isn’t mere nostalgia or therapy. It’s pop culture as palimpsest—an old memory, overlaid with new perspective.

Now, I’ll keep what I all said in mind.

When it comes down to it, everyone is ignorant in something.

Information/knowledge is fantastic. Learn what you can on your own and from others.

    #LegendofZelda A quote for today

“I think… I finally understand what my dad meant… when he told me he wanted me to be strong like you, Link. He didn’t mean strength as in lifting stuff. He meant strength as in courage.”

A quote from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. If I recall, a touching scene; also, it is considerably true. Of course it doesn’t mean to tackle a lion or to base jump off a cliff, even though those are very brave things.

    The answer is conviction.
